Board Member Job Description

The Johnson County Library Foundation serves as the fundraising arm of Johnson County Library, supporting programs, services, and initiatives that enrich lives and strengthen communities across the county. Foundation Board Members work alongside Library leadership, staff, and fellow board members to promote philanthropy, deepen community connections, and help ensure the Library continues to meet the evolving needs of its patrons. Board members are valued ambassadors, advocates, and leaders who use their expertise, networks, and passion for the Library to support its mission. By joining the Foundation Board, members shape strategic priorities, strengthen the Library’s impact, and help create equitable access to knowledge, culture, and lifelong learning. 

Responsibilities of Board Members

Board members are expected to actively contribute to the success of the Foundation through:

  • Governance and Oversight: Attend regular Board meetings (currently scheduled every other month on Thursdays from 4:30–6:00 p.m.), review reports, provide strategic guidance, and participate in decision-making to ensure the Foundation operates effectively.
  • Fundraising and Resource Development: Support the Foundation’s fundraising efforts by sharing insights, networks, and connections; assisting with campaigns, events, and initiatives; and providing leadership through personal philanthropic support.
  • Committee Participation: Serve on at least one committee to contribute expertise and help advance the Foundation’s priorities.
  • Ambassadorship: Act as a visible representative of the Library and Foundation, encouraging community engagement, philanthropy, and awareness of the Library’s programs and services.
  • Strategic Planning: Help set and evaluate the goals of the Foundation, ensuring alignment with the Library’s mission and community needs.
  • Financial Support: Demonstrate personal commitment through a financial contribution, commensurate with individual capacity, to model philanthropic leadership.

Qualifications and Qualities of an Effective Board Member

  • Passion for libraries, literacy, education, and community enrichment.
  • Willingness to contribute time, energy, and expertise to advance the Foundation’s mission.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to leverage personal and professional networks to support fundraising and advocacy efforts.
  • Commitment to ethical leadership and stewardship of donor resources.

Time Commitment

Board Terms typically consist of 3 years.

Board meetings: every other month (approximately 2 hours per meeting)
Committee participation: variable, typically 1–2 hours per month
Attendance at Foundation events and fundraising activities

By serving on the Johnson County Library Foundation Board, members help sustain and expand the Library’s programs, technology, and services, creating meaningful opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection for all members of the community.
